Pia Johnson Photographer

Pia is a Melbourne based artist and photographer. Her artistic enquiry investigates issues arising from her cultural heritage, clustered around ideas of diaspora, race, identity, family and Chinese-ness.

Pia has had three solo exhibitions; ‘threads’ at Guildford Lane Gallery and ‘Who’s the Chinese lady that picks you up from school?’ at fortyfivedownstairs in 2009 and ‘thus gone’at Victoria Park Gallery in Feb 2008.

‘Who’s the Chinese lady that picks you up from school?’ has been acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria and was exhibited as part of the ‘Love, Loss and Intimacy’ in 2010. The series has also been exhibited as part of the opening exhibition Asia

Now of Melbourne International Fine Art (MiFA).

Pia’s photography clients include Australian National Academy of Music, Australian National Boys Choir, The Flaming Beacon, Hayloft Project, Inside Job productions, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Recital Centre, Melbourne Theatre Company, Ride On Theatre, Token, Western Edge Youth Arts and Victorian Opera.

Her photographs have been published in The Australian, The Age, Herald Sun, Vesti (Serbian Community news), The Melbourne Times, Beat, Adelaide Advertiser, Xintiandi (Shanghai magazine), Melbourne Kitchen and Design Magazine and Melbourne Home and Design Magazine.

Pia has a Bachelors Degree in Creative Arts from the University of Melbourne.


We first met her because she produced our Melbourne seasons of DEBIS and FAKE PORNO. But however sought out she is in this regard, you should leave her alone. She’s not doing producing anymore. (If you have the guts, you could ask her. We would love for her to cross the line again.)
